글로벌 한국홍보대사 포부 다지기

On May 26th, 2019, I attended a ceremony held by VANK and Hwarang Youth Foundation. Arriving at the Chadwick International School in Incheon Songdo, I listened to presentations by the founder of VANK and the founder of Hwarang Youth Foundation.

The content of the presentations was shocking, yet provided me a perspective of how foreigners viewed Korea as a nation. As a Korean citizen, it upset me that some countries regarded Korea as a territory of China, and claimed that Dokdo is a Japanese territory (Takeshima). Websites showed the East Sea named as the Sea of Japan, and guidebooks from Europe lacked information about Korea’s historical achievements. Viewing this information, I felt the urge to make a change, just like the people who worked in VANK.

My identity does not solely lie on a student from Korea International School. Before anything else, I am a citizen of Korea. If citizenship truly consists in the service of one’s country, then isn’t it one’s responsibility to make an effort to present one’s nation to the best of their ability?

The primary topic that I decided to research about after listening to all the presentations was Dokdo. Korea and Japan have been arguing its territorial claim since the 1900s; with such advancement of technology today, I believe I can make a change to spread the correct information regarding Dokdo around the world.
