As my third VANK mission, I decided to make a presentation regarding Korea’s historical evidence of Dokdo. I made a short google slide presenting evidence such as Samguk Sagi, Taejong Sillok, and Sejong Sillok. In the end, I inserted a short video about Dokdo made by Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs. I presented this to two of my American friends; to my surprise, they seemed to be already aware of this issue because they have been attending an international school in Korea.

 

Although my friends knew briefly about the issue, they told me that they never knew Korea had this long of history regarding Dokdo. We also talked about the effect of Japanese imperialism and colonization on Korean culture and territory; they were familiar with this topic as it was covered in the East Asian Studies class.

 

The presentation and the discussion summed up to not over thirty minutes. However, I believe it was a valuable time both for me and my friends to learn more about Korean culture. It also provided me insight to begin advertisement of Korea’s correct history.
